Education/formation
CAMEROON: Primary Schools in Touroua
Geographic situation. Touroua is a vast county located in the Region of North Cameroon, 118 kms. from Garoua, the county seat of this Region. The town of Touroua is isolated due to the very mediocre state of the roads often impractical during the rainy season and also due to the total absence of electricity.
Since 1995, several small villages were founded by groups of immigrants from the Far North of the country seeking to survive through land that could be farmed. Today still, this zone of very rich soil attracts more and more farmers. The development of Touroua is in full flight. The rate of school-age children is 52%. Private primary schools assure the education in four villages in an area far from the center by 25-30 kms.
Project objective:
- To decrease students’ reading difficulties in primary classes.
- Give students, especially the girls (who are not many to be schooled) the desire to learn French (the official language of the Region) and be able to finish their studies.
Needs: Reading books
Means: Purchase of reading books for 1,332 students in the four Catholic primary schools. Price : 5 euros per book (3.500 CFA).
*Parents’ contribution: 1 Euro per book (655 CFA)
