Founded by women of humble origin

On 8 December 1706, at the port of the Légué , in the bay of Saint Brieuc, two women of humble origin, Marie Balavenne and Renée Burel committed themselves to live together and to devote themselves to the service of the poor, the sick and the children. They were encouraged by Mr Jean Leuduger, a diocesan parish priest, Doctor of Theology, Head of the Missions in Upper Brittany.

They honoured the Three Persons of the Trinity and so as to be filled with charity, they consecrated themselves to the Holy Spirit in a special way. They had a particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary whom they looked upon as ''their patron saint and their advocate with the Holy Spirit''.

  | The two main feasts they celebrated were Pentecost and the Immaculate Conception.

Today, in fidelity to their origins, the Daughters of the Holy Spirit still keep in mind that ''there is no mission without adoration, without calling upon the Spirit to renew the face of the world''.
