New community in Romania: 2004
From Iugani,Holy Thursday today, 2005
It’s time to give you Spring news from Iugani. For Spring is coming ! We think at times that it has come and then the following day or night, it is Winter again. For about six weeks, we have had rather low temperatures ( minus 22 degrees Celsius ) with a lot of snow and wind. And now, snowdrops are sprouting in front of the house and it is getting milder. Patricia from Bedford, England, came with Agnès and has started learning the language. During the four days’ stay of Agnès Stéphan, superior general of the congregation, we laid anew the foundations of our small community. We met the bishop who warmly welcomed us and our missionary project for Iugani. …Those days with Agnès among us were both pleasant and fruitful.
We visited the local school. When the snow was thawing, the yard was like a lake for there are no drains, no sewage system. But the children are full of life. Monica, my Romanian teacher, teaches the 10 year-olds in that school . She told me that the teachers have very few pedagogical materials at their disposal and that they have to pay with their own money. “ I am a bachelor, so I can cope but this is really impossible for housewives who have to provide for their families”, she said. Remember that a teacher earns 80 Euros a month ! Here life goes by quietly . It takes us ages to go and buy bread for there are more people in the street in the sunny weather and we like to greet everyone…. We visit the elderly and the sick : they tell us about the present-day life at Iugani but especially about life during the communist period...
It’s Holy Thursday today. Next Sunday, the people will greet one another with “ Christos a înviat” ''Christ is risen''.
