After days of severe thunderstorms, the morning of the annual DHS Family picnic in Putnam, Connecticut dawned clear and bright and dry. It was a day of good fun, good food, good music, and good company in celebration of our good God. “Why should this great thing happen to me?...” (Lk. 1:43) to be a delegate of the diocese of Saint-Brieuc taking part in the international Eucharistic Congress in Quebec, from the 15th to the 22nd of June 2008! Every year, the eleventh of February is a great day in Cameroon : it is the National Youth Day ! All over the country, in every big city and small village, all the pupils and students dressed in a uniform specific to their schools or colleges file past the local civic even religious authorities, present in the stand of a stadium. A few months ago, I joined a wonderful group called “mano à mano” whose main objective is to assist adolescent mothers. The director of the group with whom I visit these young mothers knows much about these difficult situations in Chile and how to cope with them. In a simple yet meaningful ceremony the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in the Putnam Province anointed 3 candidates as a symbol that they are now ready to live the Mission of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit and move one step closer to pronouncing their Covenant which will commit them to following more closely the 300 year old tradition of foundress Marie Balavenne in (...) Paula Jean Despathy, DHS, having served as teacher, social and pastoral worker, missionary to Nigeria, Provincial House Coordinator and Provincial Team member was elected by the Congreation’s General Chapter to a six year term as General Councilor. In June, members of the DHS family in the US had the unexpected joy of welcoming Sr. Isabel Larrondo Donoso when she accompanied Sr. Marie Wilfred Archambault home from Chile. Since April 28, the parish halls of our church at Nanterre had been occupied by “the Collective of undocumented immigrants” of the Paris region. The parishioners and ourselves had been taken aback by that intrusion, all the more so since, ten years ago, the members of the same Collective had already occupied the same premises during sixteen months. At Brest, the sisters, associates and consecrated seculars used to come together to celebrate the great events of the Congregation. In the dynamic of the Tercentenary, we wondered what we could do to enable the Family to grow and develop. In the USA, The DHS have taken part in several events sponsored by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NARCAT). The latest project involved having a banner placed on the front of the Provincial house so it could be seen from the street. The banner reads: “Daughters of the Holy Spirit say torture is wrong”.
