Human beings are not for sale
Twenty DHS or so of the Paris area and surroundings gathered in our house, rue Chaplain, for a day of study and reflection on the trafficking in women and children throughout the world. Mrs Claire Quidet, a member of the International Organisation Mouvement du Nid, informed us and sensitised us to a reality which is spreading to every continent. Her objective : to make us aware of such an appalling trade and to call us to actively combat it wherever we are.
What is human trafficking ? Three elements emerge : the transportation of persons, use of force and exploitation by way of prostitution, forced labour and the removal of organs. Human trafficking is a world-wide phenomenon. It affects from 2 to 4 million individuals each year, among whom 500 000 in Europe. 60 % of the victims are trafficked for the purpose of prostitution and 70 % of the prostitutes come from foreign countries (Eastern countries, Africa -Cameroon, Nigeria- and Asia …) But there are other forms of trafficking which mainly affect women and children, men sometimes : forced begging, forced marriage, domestic slavery, removal of organs, sexual exploitation. At the moment, Claire is conducting a campaign in Cameroon informing the young people about this new form of slavery. Then we shared in small groups and opted for several possible approaches among which the following: formation, information and awareness raising. And also, not to be afraid of denouncing, listen, talk with a beggar, communicate an address which can help the victim to escape, sign a petition – little by little change our ways of consuming (sustainable produce) – In community, pray for a person in distress. Sustain associations which work in that line : “les Champs de Booz”, for example.
In three months’ time from now, we will meet again and make an evaluation of what each one would have undertaken in solidarity with those -men, women, children- displaced by force and coercion. We will also try to look more closely into the causes of the movements of persons - linked to human trafficking.
