To live forever !
The act of wanting to live very deeply rooted is very strong in us. We struggle, we fight, we do all we can to protect our life, to live better, longer. Where does this come from?
God himself placed this desire in us, when he created us. He breathed in us the breath of life.(Gen 2:7) The prophet Ezekiel reminds us of this in today's1st reading, “I shall put my spirit in you and you will live”. We want to live. God wants it more than we do. He has sent his own Son so we may live fully. He tells us “I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full”.(John 10:10) This same Son tells us today in the Gospel, “I am the resurrection. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” What God had promised by the prophet Ezekiel, Jesus assures us that it is so. It happened for his friend Lazarus and it will happen for you and for me. We want to live. God wants us to live forever. Just think of this. “To live forever.” Joy, peace, happiness. No fear. No tear. This is what God wants for us. Do we really believe Him?
Death is the passage of this kind of life. No fear because Jesus has passed through death before us (2nd read). Are we ready to risk our life on his words? We know from experience that we don’t have to be dead physically to be in need of being raised up. We can be dead in the midst of life hoping for a word or a community that will put us together again. The voice of Jesus calls us all away from making the tomb our natural habitat. It challenges us to takes responsibility for our brothers and sisters by showing love. If we see someone unjustly treated, we are invited to seek for justice that will help the person to be free. If we do this as a part of our Lenten task, then the resurrection at Easter will ours and our Easter Joy will be complete.
