Responsible citizens
The municipal elections: an exciting subject! For so many weeks we heard about them on the radio, TV, newspapers and…in the retirement houses of Ker-Anna and Sainte Marie -Sainte Anne d'Auray, France-.
In early January a candidate asked to come speak to the residents. The director of the houses, concerned to keep information impartial and to assure each citizen's right to information gave all parties an hour in each house. The favourable solution was welcomed by everyone. Sainte Anne d'Auray, a small commune, until now has re-elected the same list almost automatically, with a great confidence between the elected and the voters. And behold, with the increase of the population competition arrived: three parties presented themselves, never before seen! Thus there was increasing interest, even passion. So on three occasions our two retirement houses received members from each party. Each time the meeting developed in the same schema: presentation of candidates, their program, a question and answer session. It was important to hear what they envisaged if elected: plans for crosswalks, housing projects, green spaces, childcare… We spoke to them of our desire to be understood and heard regarding our needs as aging and, for some of us, handicapped, citizens. They assured us of their commitment to continue this dialogue if they were elected. Afterwards we invited them to "goûter" with us to prolong the conversation in small groups. "Around the cup of coffee we learned even more, it was simpler and we felt more at ease…" "It's good that they came, we know them a bit more…and they saw the house, they saw how we are." "It's good that we heard from all three parties…"
Now the two rounds of election have passed: we feel that we acted as responsible citizens. It's up to them and to us to build the future together.
