“ There is no explanation... ”
« Unpredictable Breath, Spirit of God ”. It was indeed an unpredictable breath that breathed upon the community of La Roche Derrien (France) last Tuesday 15th of April.
We were preparing ourselves to welcome a small group of young people ( 5-6 ) who were making the “Tro Breiz”: “Tour of Brittany” (pilgrimage in honour of the seven founding saints of Brittany). It happened that two days before the agreed date, we had a phone call from the person in charge of the group. They wanted to stop at La Roche Derrien, midway between St Pol de Léon and St Brieuc, that very evening. They would be twelve : a couple, nine young people aged 16-19 and himself, the one in charge. “ No problem ”, we said “ You are welcome ”.He also asked “ Could you buy the necessary food for the evening meal and tomorrow breakfast ” and he added : “ What time do you pray Vespers ? At 6 PM. Oh, could you wait a little while so that we could join and pray with you ? ” “ Yes, certainly ”. At about 6 PM, they arrived exhausted, fagged out. Rucksacks were laid down, shoes taken off in the large room of our house where they will have their meals, will sleep and pray. A glass of fresh water was most welcomed. Then we prayed together, we were impressed by the fervour of these young people tired out by the roads they had just travelled. After the prayer, a much appreciated meal and once the washing up done, one of the accompaniers shared with us something of his personal itinerary. For over one hour, youth and sisters listened with the greatest interest to a very special testimony ! “ There is no explanation to what I am going to tell you ; no need to try to understand ; it is a lived experience, that’s all ”, he said straightaway.
He then recounted his solitary walks from the age of 14 ... and again when he was 16 and later on, at different periods in his life. No religious inner feeling, just a call : to set out ! This will take him to Compostela, Assisi, Jerusalem, but travelling these last places with companions : for him, being of a solitary nature, this part of his itinerary, a year-long pilgrimage, was a very hard trial, an interior adventure made of patience, tolerance, humility... It was only at the end of a long journeying that he understood what he had experienced : the other, the fellow traveller was Christ. An experience he cannot keep to himself.
Yes, the unpredictable Breath, the Spirit of God opens our minds, opens our hearts !
