Family History
At Brest, the sisters, associates and consecrated seculars used to come together to celebrate the great events of the Congregation. In the dynamic of the Tercentenary, we wondered what we could do to enable the Family to grow and develop. A core group, constituted of four sisters, an associate and a consecrated secular was appointed to see what could be done.
In 2007, we had chosen to focus our attention on the Associates’ movement and extended our invitations to communities outside Brest. After two meetings of study and reflection, we decided to propose to lay people who would so desire to become Associates. Some twenty people answered our invitation. Today seven women are on formation. In January 2008, the core group invited the members of the Family to deepen the meaning of consecrated life under its two forms: consecrated secularity and apostolic religious life. Unbelievable! We received eighty questions, sixty-two of which concerned consecrated seculars. From then on, the consecrated seculars of the area had set off, two by two, to meet the sisters and associates, inform them, talk to them about the Emmaus road they had travelled since 1994 when the creation of a Secular Branch had been envisaged in the Congregation. This has meant for them six half-days of sharing. The meetings were all marked by spontaneous trust: many based on the documents received from the Congregation throughout the members’ journeying and questions cropped up : this is something new ! “I have particularly loved the way you say you relate to Jesus, the One who is waiting for you when you come back to your solitude. Many thanks to you both for sharing your joy with us” (a sister).
We consider these half-days of sharing as times of foundation, following the foundation that took place at St Brieuc in June 2003. In these groups that gather from seven to thirty people, it’s like Pentecost again. Those two years of research and dialogue, of mutual trust couldn’t come to an end without a fraternal get-together. On Saturday 7 June, fifty-four members of the Family gathered for a time of celebration and thanksgiving. “It’s now the favourable time”.
