In link with the article “Choose life then”, the address given by Father André Talbot on the 16 October 2011 entitled: “For a collaborative and sustainable development… Original contributions of the Christian experience to this quest”.
“What do we know about life on the Earth, how many species do we know: one tenth, one hundredth maybe? What do we know about the relations that are being forged among them? The Earth is a miracle, the living world remains a mystery. Families of animals have been constituted, bound together through habits and rites which continue from generation to generation. Some have adjusted themselves to the nature of their pasture and their pasture has adapted to them. There is something in it for each, the animal for its hunger, the tree for new sprouts. In the great adventure of the earth, each species has its part, each species its place. None is useless or harmful, everything is well balanced.
And it is here, that you, Homo Sapiens, the one who is endowed with the power to think, appear in this history. You benefit from the wondrous heritage of over 4 billions of years which the Earth grants you. You are only two hundred and thousand years old and you will conquer all the milieus, take possession of entire territories in a way no other species had done before you…
We have engendered phenomena that get out of our control. From the origins, the water, the air, the matter, the living world are intimately linked. From a recent date, we have broken these bonds. Let’s not look away. What we know, we must believe… We are left very short time to change… The time has come to come together. What matters most is not what we have lost but what we are left with. We are left with half the world forests, thousands of rivers, lakes, glaciers. Thousands of species are still alive and well. We are well aware today that solutions exist. We all have the power to change. Then, what do we expect? It is up to us to continue writing our history. Together. “
