“Community service” in Idimu

"Community service", in Lagos state, Nigeria, was initiated by St. School Idimu, and is animated by Sr. Rosemary Etim DHS, where children who live around the school environment are given free educational training. Here, some students of St. Francis College are trained to teach these very young ones in turn. This service takes place within St. Francis school premises.

Every Saturday, little children ranging from the ages of 5 to 15 come to the school to learn. The children have to arrive at exactly 9:30am. At 9:45am, assembly starts in the Amphitheatre. Immediately after the assembly, classes commence, and two student-teachers are assigned to teach a class. One teacher takes the first period while the other takes the second period. The student-teachers try to ensure that the children enjoy every period of their learning in school. I am happy to say that we have not only impacted knowledge on the children but we have also taught them the moral aspect of life.

I joined “community service” as a student because I have interest in helping people solve their academic problems. It gives me great joy because I love little children. Playing the role of an assistant head mistress was so difficult for me at the beginning but I got used to it gradually. I had to learn how to work with my fellow student-teachers. We try to ensure that everything moves smoothly. After each day of lesson, I feel satisfied and fulfilled because I know that I am helping little children who are really in need. At the end of every term, we organize celebration for the children as we did recently and the children were so happy, singing, dancing eating and parting with many gifts.

The success of this “community service” would not have been possible without the help of the head mistress and all those who helped, I say them a big thank you.

There is great joy in serving!
