Toward an ecological conversion

It is the “Season of Creation”, a time when Christians all over the world come to together to celebrate Earth, our common home. This year’s theme is: 'A home for all'. Renewing the oikos (household) of God. Earth is not only our home but also God’s home. Do we really believe that? Do we humans treat Earth like our home or rather like a hotel with unlimited hot and cold running water, with endless buffets, a place where we can drop our towels on the floor and leave our trash for someone else to take care of?

In Laudato Si', Pope Francis has said that the Earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth which is linked to our throwaway culture (LS 21 & 22). Harsh words from Pope Francis. It is time to renew and restore and protect our Earth before our home collapses. Things cannot keep going the way they have been. Things have to change. We have to change.

Our recent General Chapter has committed the Congregation to a change of mind and heart and action by adopting the 7 goals of Laudato Si':

Respond to the cry of Earth
Respond to the cry of the Poor
Ecological economics
Adoption of sustainable lifestyles
Ecological education
Ecological spirituality
Community engagement and participatory action

We will discover together what this will look like, what we need to be and do. In Isaiah 43:4 God says that we are precious and cherished and loved. Not just humans but all of creation is precious and cherished and loved by God and held in the palm of God’s hand. This gives me hope that we can change, that we can have the ecological conversion called for by Pope Francis, that we can stop the destruction of our home in time and that it will always be the season of creation.

“For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.” Jer 29:11
