“Better take change by the hand before it takes us by the throat.” said Winston Churchill
From October 3 to 4, 2025, the Daughters of the Holy Spirit and the associates of the Vice Province of Cameroon met at the ‘Renée Burel” reception center in Maroua-Galdima, to experience a strong time of prayer, sharing, and reflection with ‘Laudato-Si’, the encyclical of Pope Francis on the safeguarding of creation. A beautiful opportunity to revive the fraternity and strengthen the ties that unite the members of the Spiritual Family ‘Daughter of the Holy Spirit’. The assembly began with an opening prayer and the reading of the letter of October 4 addressed to the whole Family by the General Superior, on the occasion of the General Assembly. This was followed by a deep reflection on our past and present actions towards our sister, nature, and on the vision we wish to build for the future.
Aware of the dangers and repercussions of the destruction of nature on our health, our environment and our lives, we are committed to adopting concrete ways to protect it: a personal and constant commitment, awareness through education and training, solidarity towards vulnerable people, reforestation, compost making, animal protection and many other ecological initiatives. It is true that everyone is responsible for the protection or destruction of their lives, but we are called to act in co-responsibility and in collaboration with local authorities, for a real ecological conversion and a change of mentality.
The exchanges in workshops, the sharing of experiences, the documentaries and the singing made and presented by Sister Marceline ITHESI, as well as the works prepared by the team of the Spiritual Family, allowed us to become aware that destroying nature is destroying man himself. A highlight of this meeting was the Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Father Justin HINBARA, priest of the major seminary. After the solemn blessing, Sister Angèle, vice-provincial, sent each one on a mission to put into practice the protection of our ‘common home’.
We concluded this assembly by setting practical ecological actions: the manufacture of improved stoves that reduce wood consumption and smoke production, the recycling of plastic bottles and the realization of natural composts. These simple but significant gestures are concrete responses to the call launched by Laudato Si.
