Young children caring for our “Common House”

Taking care of our “Common House”, as suggested in Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, is the responsibility of everyone, big or small, rich or poor.

With this in mind, at the Saint-Esprit nursery school in Koudougou, Burkina Faso, we are trying to communicate to children from 3 to 5 years old the responsibility of ownership, maintenance of trees, flowers and plants…

For a week, we have made the children of the middle section -4 years old- aware of the maintenance of our environment. Since then, the children have become “advisors” among themselves: they automatically put their biscuit bags in the bins in the classrooms and when one of them makes the mistake of leaving them lying around, they run to tell their teacher! Every evening, they also make a point of watering the plants…

In this way we realise that it is possible for young children to take care of our “Common House”, to protect and safeguard our planet.  Each one of us can work for a clean and beautiful environment for all, not only on the school property, but also at home with their parents, in their city of Koudougou for the cleanliness of the streets which should not lack dustbins…

Let us work together for the beautification and protection of our environment.
