KENYA, day of Mazingira

In KENYA, we, Daughters of the Holy Spirit, encourage environmental protection and we are delighted to take advantage of every opportunity: on October 10, 2025, the day of Mazingira* provided us with one of those beautiful opportunities!

We had left to plant trees when some children saw us: they joyfully came in large numbers to join us in planting trees, boys and girls between one year and about 12 years. Some women have also joined us. Each child planted a fruit tree: some tried to clean the soil before planting in order to rid it of bad roots – we explained to them why it was not necessary to do this which can make the soil less fertile in the long term… Other children tried to plant the tree with the root facing up and the branches in the ground… and we also told them to do the opposite so that the plant grows upwards!
The completed activity, about 50 trees have been planted, mainly with soursop and palm trees.

It was truly a beautiful day Mazingira, just a few days after the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi and the benefits that Pope Francis’ encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ brings to each of us.

* Mazingira: The word Mazingira means environment. Kenyans celebrate Mazingira Day every year on 10 October, a public holiday dedicated to environmental conservation and management. The goal is simple: every Kenyan should take positive steps for the planet. It is a national call to protect our unique ecosystems.
